On March 10, 1766 a fire broke out that damaged a large part of the complex housing the church and hospital of Saint John of God. The news spread across the city by means of pamphlets that were printed to notify the public of important events. The sheet included a drawing of the event, which provided a visual version of the story, accompanied by the following text at the bottom:

“A real copy of the damage caused by the fire in the Church of Our Father Saint John of God of Mexico, in two and a half hours on March 10, 1766, verifying that the monks wished to free the patients rather than help the church, complying with their institute.”
